ANIMAL LIFE CYCLES

We began our look at animal life cycles with a single introductory text, Dianna Aston’s (2006) An Egg Is Quiet (see Figure 5.11). This choice was driven by several reasons: many animals begin their life cycle as an egg; students would be studying the adaptations and evolution of birds; the book includes mention of fossilized dinosaur eggs; and having read A Seed Is Sleepy (2007), students were familiar with the text structure employed within the book. Both A Seed Is Sleepy (2007) and An Egg Is Quiet (2006) are books that encourage observation and inquiry, by inviting young readers to consider the many different characteristics of seeds and eggs. During the read-aloud, students noted in their science notebooks the adjectives used by Aston to describe the characteristics of eggs (see Figure 5.12). Following the read-aloud, teachers created an anchor chart recording their connections (see Figure 5.13).
